Stephen Thompson has been on a tear since losing to Matt Brown in his second UFC fight in 2012. The karate practitioner has knocked out four opponents during his six-fight win streak. Many worried that Thompson’s lack of ground skills would hinder his chances of being a true contender, but training with former middleweight champion Chris Weidman, and dominating wrestle-minded Johny Hendricks in his last appearance have dispelled any criticisms. Thompson’s mastery of distance and kicks are truly something to behold. The South Carolina native has knocked out seven of his 13 career opponents, including former welterweight champion Hendricks in his last appearance at UFC Fight Night 82.

Rory MacDonald will be a champion one day. The protegé of Georges St. Pierre is notoriously proficient in the execution of the game-plans set forth by Tristar MMA head coach Firas Zahabi. At 26-years-old, “The Red King” still has plenty of room to grow, and has already shared the octagon with great fighters such as Carlos Condit, Nate Diaz, BJ Penn, Tyron Woodley, and of course, current champion Robbie Lawler. MacDonald’s three-fight winning streak in 2014 led to a title shot against one of the two men to ever defeat him, Robbie Lawler. Their back-and-forth battle at UFC 189 is the consensus best fight in UFC history. The injuries sustained in the July, 2015, bout have kept MacDonald sidelined since then.
