Former UFC bantamweight champion Renan Barao returned to action for the first time since losing his title to T.J. Dillshaw. Fighting in the co-main event against Mitch Gagnon, Barao took one step further in regaining his bantamweight title shot, which he previously lost for pulling out of his rematch at UFC 177.
The former champion came into the bout as a greater than 8-to-1 favourite over the 14th ranked bantamweight, despite Gagnon coming off four straight victories in the UFC–including three by submission.
